American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim Program


Children Ages 2 - 5:


Parent/Child Aquatics 
(for children ages 2 - 5)

The Parent & Child Aquatics class is designed to help young children become comfortable in and around the water which lays the foundation for future aquatic skills.

Pre-requisite: Child must be potty trained

Course:  Structured for children 2 to 5 years of age. This class builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water. Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, kicking, floating, underwater exploration and more.

 
Preschool Aquatics
(for children ages 4 & 5)

 The Preschool Program is designed to give young children a positive developmentally appropriate aquatic learning experience. The two preschool levels are the equivalent of level one of the Learn to Swim Program.

Preschool level 1

Prerequisite: None

Course:  The primary focus is on introducing the child to the aquatic environment while helping gain basic aquatic skills such as blowing bubbles, submerging their head, kicking and more.

Preschool level 2

Prerequisite: Submerge head, blow bubbles under water

Course:  The primary focus is to have the child develop more comfort in & around the water while gaining more independence with glides and floats.

 

Children Ages 6 - 17:

The Learn to Swim Program is designed to give children ages 6 and older a positive developmentally appropriate aquatic learning experience.

Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills

Prerequisite: None

Course:  The primary focus is building swimming readiness by teaching elementary skills including bubble blowing, kicking, floating, breath control, gliding, and more.


Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Prerequisite: Submerge head, blow bubbles, front & back float

Course:  The primary focus is on proper body position and the coordination of arms & legs in order to perform the elementary backstroke and front stroke, as well as introduce side breathing.


Level 3 - Stroke Development

Prerequisite: Front stroke & elementary backstroke

Course:  The primary focus is on coordinating side breathing while swimming front stroke as well as learning dolphin kick, scissor kick, and whip kick.


Level 4 - Stroke Improvement

Prerequisite: Front stroke with side breathing, elementary backstroke, scissors kick, and dolphin kick

Course:  The primary focus is learning backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and sidestroke while increasing swimming distance for previous strokes learned.


Level 5 - Stroke Refinement

Prerequisite: Front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary stroke and sidestroke

Course:  The primary focus is stroke refinement and increasing swimming distance while using open and flip turns.


Level 6 - Fitness Swimmer

Prerequisite: Demonstrate all previous skills while using open & flip turns

Course:  The primary focus is stroke refinement, distance, and the fundamentals of fitness swimming including the use of a pace clock and skill sets.
