 Science and Natural Resources Pathway Course Descriptions

 

Biology – Natural Resources
Open to: 10 -- Full Year = 1.0 credit

Equivalency = Lab Science or Occupational Education

Biology-Natural Resources is designed for students to learn the major concepts and themes of biology through laboratory and field experiences which focus on the ecological interactions between and among living and physical systems.  This course covers topics including the scientific process, development of biology as a science, characteristics of life, molecular and cellular biology, classification, ecology, biodiversity, wat and land use issues and ecosystems/biomes.  Students demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and application of the biological principles and concepts of the Washington State Science Standards through a problem-solving project-based approach.

 

Plant Science
Open to: 10,11,12 grade -- Full Year = 1.0

Equivalency = Lab Science or Occupational Education

Plant Science is designed for students to learn preparatory concepts and skills through laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiences which focus on the details of horticultural practices.  This class provides an interdisciplinary systems approach to the study of plant development and identification, soil science, plant health, disease and disorders, care and maintenance of plants, greenhouse operations, introductory floral design, landscape design, and plant research through a problem-solving approach and leadership at local and national FFA competitions.

Programs of Study and Pathway Honors at Rogers High School

Below is a quick guide to the sequence of courses required to complete a Program of Study and/or earn Pathway Honors.  Students who complete the following Programs of Study  with  a B (3.0) or better and starting with the fall of 2019, with a C (2.0) or Better in each of the required courses are eligible to receive a Certificate and Pathway Honors,  and will receive Pathway Cords to wear at graduation. For Arts and Communications, the cord is Orange

of 3.0 credits from the following:

 

  • Biology Natural Resources or Biology – 1.0
  • Plant Science I -   1.0
  • Plant Science II -  1.0
  • Landscape Design – 1.0

 

Natural Resources

Required Courses - must complete a minimum

of 3.0 credits from the following:

 

  • Biology Natural Resources – 1.0
  • AP Environmental Science -   1.0

Plus, one year of:

  • Chemistry -  1.0
  • Plant Science – 1.0
  • Marine Resources

 

Lab Sciences

Required Courses - must complete a minimum

of 3.0 credits from the following:

 

  • Biology Natural Resources or Biology – 1.0
  • Chemistry -   1.0
  • AP Chemistry -  1.0
  • AP Biology - 1.0
  • AP Physics – 1.0
  • Astronomy – 1.0

Students will be awarded their Certificate of Completion and their Pathway Honor Cords based on grades from their transcript. No application is needed for these awards.
